Position Purpose :
•The incumbent will be responsible for the maintenance, installation and repair of Telecommunication equipment and
networks. The incumbent will lead the team in Polokwane to achieve the above.
Position outputs :
•Perform regular and periodic maintenance as per schedules in order to keep the above-mentioned equipment and networks
functional within service and operational specifications and SLA’s
•Update maintenance schedules in consultation with the Technical Manager and asset owner
•Logically analyse faults and develop methods to prevent re-occurrence
•Assist first line maintenance staff with faults when required and or if service level is adversely affected
•Prepare, plan and carry out physical installation of communication related equipment, protection, cables, OFC, batteries,
charges, remote monitoring and metering equipment
•Prepare and execute training for sub-ordinates, students and new appointees and peers and monitor progress

•Write technical reports on equipment failures and problems
•Manage and control sub-ordinates, including their workload and execution thereof
•Maintain site files for each site
•Keep abreast with new technologies in the Telecommunication field and do self-study where required
•Prepared to undergo training as and when required
•Actively participate in Act 85 and Transtel Trims Programs
Qualifications Experience :
•Be in possession of a T3/S4 qualification Or
•Be exempted according to letter SM(3)22/2/2 dated 28 December 1990. Or
•Have passed matric and a minimum of 10yrs relevant experience
•Be in possession of a valid (code B) drivers licence and be a competent driver.
•Be prepared to attend courses as and when available and required.
•Have an understanding of Transtel equipment principles
•Have knowledge of the maintenance of underground copper truck cables
•Have knowledge of fibre optic cables and SDH transmission system and multiplexing technology.
•Be prepared to work after hours and do standby.
Competencies :
•Have knowledge of switching equipment, analogue and digital
•Have sound knowledge in Electronics
•Be able to do physically demanding work e.g. installation of cabling and equipment
•Be able to lead a team to satisfy the requirements of Freight Rail and other clients
