Student Support: Student Psychologist – Tertiary School in Business Administration (TSiBA)

Accountable to: Head of Student Support

Job Grade: C5

Main purpose of this role:  To provide professional psychological support to
students

 To work closely with Student Development
Coordinator, mentors, students and staff to ensure
necessary intervention with students where
required

 To intervene in situations of risk

Responsibilities:

Core
 KPA1: Provide one-to-one counseling for students
 KPA2: Facilitate group counseling sessions (together with Head of Student Support)
 KPA3: Train and provide ongoing supervision for Peer Counsellors
 KPA4: Monitor the attendance and psychological well-being of students and provide

support to students in high risk situations
 KPA5: Work closely with students who are academically at risk
 KPA6: Collect data regarding psychological support provided and compile reports

thereon

 KPA7: Keep abreast of ongoing development in Student Psychology as well as
implementing of measures essential to the wellbeing of the Psychologists/ Peer
Counsellors KPA8: Work closely with Academic Programmes’ team and serve advisory
function in terms of providing feedback and making recommendations on high risk
cases

Additional
 KPA9: Participation in TSiBA’s generic activities (e.g. student and applicant

interviews) and events
 KPA10: Monitoring Evaluation (described below)

Experience and Qualifications:

 Masters degree in psychology or social work
 Five years experience working with young adults particularly with issues relating to

HIV/AIDS, sexual health, physical and emotional abuse and addiction.

 Counseling qualifications
 Current registration with HPCSA.
 Experience at a management level

Monitoring Evaluation:
30 counseling sessions per
week on average

 Track and report on the number of hours spent on hours 1-on-1 counseling
 Track and report on the number of volunteer hours spent on hours 1-on-1 counseling
 Track and report on the number of visits to Student Psychologist
 Track and report on the number of repeat visits to Student Psychologist
 Track and report on the types of counseling needed
