RESEARCH COORDINATOR (CLINICAL ASSESSOR)

The HIV Mental Health Research Unit within the Division of Neuropsychiatry seeks to appoint a Psychiatric
Nurse/Social Worker/Registered Counselor for a full-time, 2-year contract position as a Research Coordinator/
Clinical Assessor. The applicant will join a team working on a study investigating the effectiveness of a nurse-
administered cognitive-behavioral therapy intervention in treating depression in patients failing first-line ARVs. The
applicant will assist with study coordination and will conduct psychiatric diagnostic assessments and complete an
extensive battery of measures with all participants upon completion of treatment and at all follow-up time points.
The applicant will be required to commute between the two study sites in Khayelitsha. The research is funded by
the National Institute of Mental Health in the U.S. and is a R01 grant, in collaboration with investigators from
Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard University and the University of Miami. We invite applications from
suitably qualified candidates.
Requirements:
Registration with the HPCSA as a Clinical Nurse Practitioner/Social Worker/Registered Counselor
Demonstrable experience relevant to the practice of psychiatry, and in the field of depression specifically
Verbal, written and reading fluency in English and isiXhosa
Valid Driver’s License and own reliable transport
Ability to work well within a team
Experienced and adaptable in the use of technology e.g. smart phones, tablets, computers, etc.
Willingness to be flexible and assist with various tasks in the study as the need arises
Advantageous:
Demonstrable research experience preferably in psychotherapy research
Demonstrable experience working in HIV
Previous exposure to primary care clinics in South Africa
Familiarity with UCT (or other tertiary institution) administration processes
Responsibilities:
Study coordination post-treatment
Psychiatric diagnostic assessments
Data collection and entry
Participation in weekly supervision
Oral and written translations
Liaising with the research teams at the study sites
Providing regular updates to the Project Manager and GSH study team
Engaging in regular communication with staff at the ARV Clinic sites
Assisting with various tasks as the need arises
The annual cost of employment is between R167,031 and R311,393.
