The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is a Section 3(a) public entity under the Ministry of
Water and Environmental Affairs and is governed by a Board of Directors. The company
became a public entity on 15 July 2001 in terms of the South African Weather Service Act (No.
8 of 2001). It is an authoritative voice for weather and climate forecasting in South Africa and
as a member of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) it complies with international
meteorological standards. As an Aviation Meteorological Authority, SAWS is designated by
the state to provide weather services to the aviation industry, marine and a range of other
identified clients and to fulfil a range of international obligations of the government.

Senior Manager: Commercial
Salary: (Total Package Negotiable)

Five Year Contract

Centre: Pretoria

Key performance areas:

 Develop strategies to market the business as a preferred meteorological and climate

information provider of choice in South Africa and Sub Saharan Africa.

 Develop and maintain high level strategic relationships and networks with key

stakeholders in the meteorological industry, government agencies, global companies and

other relevant functions.

 Provide input into the development and implementation of the commercial strategy

according to company goals and objectives aiming to accelerate growth

 Conduct market research and analysis to create detailed business plans on commercial

opportunities (expansion, business development etc.) in the Government and Africa

sectors

 Understand the requirements of existing customers to ensure their needs are being met

 Act to acquire new customers and manage client relationships (new and existing)

 Collaborate with and coordinate diverse teams (Marketing, Research and Development

Regional, ICT etc.) to manage key customers (existing and new), thereby improving

turnover and profitability.

 Build and maintain profitable partnerships with key stakeholders

 Monitor performance of commercial activities using key metrics and prepare reports for

senior management

 Assist in setting financial targets and budget development and monitoring

 Work cross-functionally to design and develop the Commercial function, resources,

processes and procedures, tools and ways of working to implement and commercial

effectiveness within the organization.

Requirements:

 The ideal candidate should have a Bachelor’s Degree in Business/Commercial or an

equivalent relevant qualification. A Masters (e.g. MBA or MBL) or CA qualification will be

an added advantage. A minimum of 5 years working experience within Government or

International export markets or equivalent position within a Corporate field.

Competency requirements:

 Proven experience in sales and/or marketing and managing relationships with key clients

 Experience in developing, managing partnerships or joint ventures

 Experience in evaluating risk and governance systems and processes

 In-depth understanding of market research methods and analysis

 Solid knowledge of performance reporting and financial/budgeting processes

 Stakeholder and relationship Management experience

 Excellent political acumen

 Policy analysis, communication and influence experience

 Export trading environment experience

 Commercial awareness partnered with a strategic mindset

 Knowledge of standards and relevant legislation such as ICAO, WMO Standards, SACAA

Regulations, PFMA, TQM, Product Research and Development

 Analytical, constructive, creative and holistic thinking

 Display Leadership, Mentoring and Coaching skills

 Sound Budgeting and Project management experience

 Honest and ethical
