weather and climate forecasting in South Africa and as a member of the World Meteorological

Key Performance Areas
This position is responsible for the maintenance, development, improvement and expansion
of the National Ambient Air Quality Monitoring infrastructure and other peripheral equipment
of the South African Weather Service to meet the requirements of the 2007 National
Framework. The successful applicant must be a dedicated, technical person with an extremely
high sense of responsibility and will be expected to deliver on the following:
- Maintenance and improvement of existing infrastructure and development of air
quality monitoring networks, as well as expansion of existing networks.
- Electronic , electrical and mechanical maintenance of the country wide air quality
monitoring systems infrastructure on a continuous 24 hours per day basis.
- Data flow and accuracy from the monitoring infrastructure and limiting down time to
a minimum.
- Scheduled routine maintenance and calibration, ad-hoc non-routine maintenance as
well as modifications and repairs on the monitoring infrastructure.
- Assembly and installation of monitoring systems and associated peripheral equipment
according to prescribed guidelines.
- Active involvement in the commissioning and installation of new technical
applications and solutions.
- Give guidance to and assist junior staff in the solving of problems, scheduled tasks,
and other routine functions pertaining to the monitoring infrastructure.
- Keep abreast of and report on the service ability of, as well as availability and quality
of data from the monitoring network.
- Interaction with technical staff in the Regions and head office in Technical as well as
Scientific and ICT fields, with respect to operational and other associated assistance.
- Report on status of infrastructure and projects.
- Ensure that the requirements for preventative and corrective maintenance as well as
infrastructure recapitalization are estimated, motivated for and communicated to
management and included in Departmental budgets.
- Maintain good/productive stakeholder and client relationships and ensure 80%
client satisfaction.
- Assist with the management and implementation of the air quality municipal support
program.
- Ensure adherence to ISO 9001 and ISO 17025.
- Keep abreast of the latest air quality monitoring systems infrastructures and related
developments, technologies and techniques.
- Ability to work under supervision and independently to solve problems, and perform
tasks and other routine functions pertaining to the monitoring infrastructure.
- Contribute to the strategic direction and business plan of the South African Weather
Service, and pay special attention to targets, transformation and recapitalization.
- Act as a mentor to junior staff and provide support to the Regional offices and remote
locations.
- Manage software tools for budgeting, reporting and project management purposes.
- Manage air quality workshop and the job card system.
- Ensure equipment and consumables are purchased timeously and maintain operating
stock.
- Ensure project expenditure within time and budget.
Requirements:
Four year tertiary qualification in Air Quality Sciences or an equivalent or higher qualification
with a minimum of four years of related work experience. The job may require more than 8
hours per day as workload dictates. During commercial ventures the hours might fall outside
the official working hours. The incumbent must have a Code 8 drivers license for a gear shift
vehicle, advanced computer skills, organizational skills for varied tasks, good interpersonal
skills, ability to resolve complicated routine correspondence enquiries, ability to work under
pressure and within time constraints, good general knowledge of the operations of the
organization as well as the strategic intent, and an ability to manage projects from concept to
completion.
